She was involved in running and overseeing Superior Bank, an Illinois institution co-owned by her family that was at the forefront of turning subprime loans into securities, the risky practice at the heart of the financial crisis. The bank collapsed in 2001 after regulators discovered accounting irregularities that overstated its assets.

Sources close to Obama said Pritzker is conducting an extensive review of her vast financial holdings and weighing whether she can disentangle herself to the extent necessary to meet Obama’s strict standards for service in his administration. Assuming she can, Obama sources said, the job is hers.

sources say Prtizker would accept the job, which would be formally offered after vetting is complete. But whether the rigors of the Obama vetting process will present a challenge to a businessperson with no record in public office — and presumably extensive financial holdings — is still a question.

Being involved in one of the largest bank failures of its time? One would think the “rigors” of “the Obama vetting process” would drop Penny Pritzker right off the balance sheet.
