Paradox - Daily Kos outclasses Firedoglake in their reaction to the news yesterday of Attorney General Michael Mukasey collapsing during a speech he was just starting.

Word is Mukasey suffered from a simple fainting spell.

Mukasey opened his speech on terrorism with a wry remark about expecting the mood at the conservative Federalist Society dinner to be “somber or sober.” He slumped over the podium about 15 minutes later and could be seen swaying and shaking slightly just before he collapsed.

“Oh, no, no!” people in the audience cried out as Mukasey fell. “Oh, my God!”

Attorney General Michael Mukasey collapsed around 10 pm EDT this evening. He was the keynote speaker tonight at the Federalist Society’s annual lawyers conference at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C.

According to friends in the room, emergency paramedics were there to work on him pretty quickly, but there’s no sense as to how things are going. It may have been a stroke. He has been taken to the hospital.

Justice Alito and former Attorney General Ashcroft were among those in attendance in this room of ~2000, and everyone there was pretty much silent, crying and praying quietly.

Let us keep Mukasey in our prayers as well tonight. More news as we know it.

When Russian bombers enter that expanded area, sometimes called the outer air defense identification zone by the military, U.S. or Canadian fighter jets are dispatched to check them, Herritage said.

I think what struck me so funny was that anyone would have even entertained the notion that Palin was speaking from actual experience rather than merely pulling something out of thin air to explain her ridiculous assertion away. Did anyone take her response seriously? Really? What’s even stranger — Palin may have actually meant it.

Here are just a few of the incidents of Russians threatening U.S. Airspace off Alaska:

29 September 2006 — NORAD scrambled Canadian CF-18s from CFB Cold Lake in Central Alberta and American F-15s out of an airbase in Alaska to intercept a number of the Russian Tu-95 Bear heavy bombers participating in an annual Russian air force exercise near the coast of Alaska and Canada.

5 September 2007 — six Russian bombers were intercepted by six F-15s from Elmendorf Air Force Base, 50 miles from the northwest coast of Alaska.

November 2007 — F-22A Raptors performed their first intercept of two Russian Tu-95s in Alaska.

9 February 2008 — in the Western Pacific, a Russian Tu-95 flew over the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz twice, at a low altitude of about 2,000 feet, while another bomber circled about 58 miles out. Four American F/A-18 fighters were scrambled to track the bombers.

There have been eight incidents off Alaska since July. Among the latest, on September 5, six F-15s from Elmendorf Air Force Base, adjacent to Anchorage, Alaska, intercepted six Russian bombers about 50 miles from the northwest coast of Alaska.

Two similar incidents occurred in August, one near Cape Lisburne, Alaska, and the other near Cold Bay, Alaska, west of the Aleutian Islands.

Now, these are only the reported incidents with this particular Russian aircraft. Imagine all the other potential incidents involving fighters or naval assets! Also, notice how Russian incursions into others’ sovereign airspace (or close calls) have increased markedly since 2007. 2002, 2004, and 2006 saw only one incident each, while 2007 showed 7 incidents, and 2008 has already produced 6, and the year isn’t yet halfway over!
